The West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department, located in Carter County Tennessee was established in 1970. Started as an idea by members of the Milligan Optimist Club located in Milligan College, Tennessee to provide fire protection services to the residents and properties located in the western portion of Carter County.

The first station was located in an old garage building on the Milligan College campus. The original members worked tirelessly to obtain equipment and training and in recruiting members of the community to join the ranks. On March  1970 the department responded to its first call, a structure fire in a home located less than a mile from the station. The working fire was brought under control in a matter of minutes and the home sustained minimal damage. The West Carter VFD was off and running.

Today, thanks to the efforts of many past volunteers and their dedication to seeing the department thrive, West Carter County VFD is equipped with state of the art firefighting equipment and facilities. Apparatus has gone from being used fire trucks and former milk truck tankers to professionally built engines and tankers. The department provides structural firefighting services, first response medical services, wild-land fire fighting, vehicle extrication and rescue services, and Haz-Mat response. 

Throughout its long history, West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department has earned a reputation for excellence. The men and women who are part of the department today are known for their dedication and commitment to serving our community.
